PMU Adoptions
&
Information

PMU stands for Pregnant Mare's Urine, and is used in the production of Premarin, a hormone replacement drug for menopausal women. Since Premarin is not being prescribed as often as in the past, there is not as much need for PMU farms. As a result, there are less PMU operations in existence.

This is a mixed blessing. For those ranchers who love horses and were looking for away to use their tremendous acreage and further their love of horses, it is the end of an era. For those foals who were merely a by-product of PMU production, it means they won't be born, and suffer the fates that used to befall previous foals.

There is a lot of information about PMU farms available. To hear from the farmers who raise these animals, visit www.naeric.org . Check out the information and decide for yourself.

There are still programs that facilitate the adoptions of PMU foals. These include:
Spring Hill Rescue, VT
United Pegasus Foundation
PMU Foal Adoption Network
