New Year Changes
Posted by Farm at December 22nd, 2008
It’s been an exciting and busy last few months. The economy has presented us with some challenges we only half expected, giving us more mouths to feed than we had expected. That’s okay. Our goats stay with us until we find them good homes, so the little girls will contribute to milk supply if nothing else. We will not be breeding as many does as we normally would, to cut down on the numbers for the future. The farm will also be expanding to include agri-tourism.
This past month has been especially difficult. We lost power after an ice storm and then have been hit by three snow storms in a row. The doelings are so tough they are walking through the snow, something their mothers have refused to do. I love these goats! The older girls are stuck inside for a little while longer as we have to rebuild fence lines and shovel their pasture out for them. They don’t understand, but at least their warm and dry.
We lost 85% of our fence lines, including most of Magi & Zeus’ pasture fence. Good news is we’ll have lots of fire wood for 2009. Bad news is we have to find a way to finish cutting for 2008. That big wood pile is getting smaller by the day.
Hames & Axle has always been about education, and to that end, we’re shifting some of our efforts to the web. This blog will continue to give occasional updates about the farm, but will also be used more frequently to explain or elaborate on a farming, food or environmental issue that may be in the news. This is an exciting time with a new President coming in. I hesitate to be as enthusiastic as I am, as it looks like the environment has finally made it to the front burner for some attention. With all the difficulty that so many are facing, I see farming and the environment as an attainable base to work from. And so do many others. Please feel free to email me any questions you’d like to see answered, and keep in touch. Thanks,
