Hames
and Axle Farm welcomes Magi
Meet Magicou, Magi,
for short. Magi is a PMU foal, purchased through PMU Foalquest. She is half Canadien,
1/4 Quarter and 1/4 Percheron. Her mother was a QH X Percheron, her sire a full
blooded Canadien.
It's
been my dream to have a horse of my own, especially a draft horse. But our little
10 acre Hames and Axle Farm isn't big enough for a big drafter. Given our climate
and terrain, the tough little Canadien horse, "Little Iron Horse," was
the perfect solution.
After
looking for several years, with the help of many generous people, I decided to
adopt this little PMU filly. To me, she offered the perfect blend of a Canadien
and a draft horse. Whether my instincts are right, I'll have to wait and see.
We're anxiously awaiting her arrival from Alberta, to keep Zeus company, and me!

Le
Cheval Canadien - "Little
Iron Horse" - This National horse of Canada has contributed to breeds throughout
North America, notably the Morgan, Saddlebred and Pacers. Wonderful information
available at this site, home of Cherry Creek Canadiens.
Well, remember my
comment on how I don't have room for a big drafter? Well, I'd better make room.
This is Magi at 6 months old, on the day we first saw her. Quite a surprise! She
is very much a horse of a different color, and what color! She may only be 1/4
Perch, but it must be the bottom half, because she's big. She's already over 12
hands, probably closer to 13, though we can't get a hand on her yet to measure
her for sure. She's beautiful, and gentle, and is now in her "forever home."
What a Magi-cal addition to our farm.!
Magi seems to be the
Mommy type. This picture was taken by Pam McLeod, another adopter. During pick
up day, we often found Magi taking care of other foals, or hiding behind them!
Magi is our horse
of a different color, but the horse of my dreams. She may only be a baby, but
she's already about 13 hands, and destined to break 16H before she's full grown.
While her life won't be full of shows, it will be full of fun and love. By the
way she moves, and the way she thinks, she could do anything for anyone. But for
us, nothing fancy, just a member of the family.
This is Magi as of
2/19/03, after the big snow. She's had quite a winter with us, and I don't know
if it's the weather of her, but she's getting grayer by the day!
She's already
15H high, and she's just 10-12 months old. Since I don't know her birthday, I
can only assume she's coming to a yearling. She leads well, picks up all four
feet, stands beautifully, and moves back and side/side very well. Now, if we could
just get that halter on and off without a hassle!
"The Metamorphosis of Magi"
This picture was taken on 3/19, and you can see she's going gray.(I thought I
was the only one that happened to so fast!) She's shedding quickly and is now
a lot easier to see at night! What a marvelous girl she is!
This is Magi as a yearling. She's
about 15H now, and takes the bit well. She's being introduced to ground driving
this summer, but behaves very well for everyone. We're constantly amazed how sweet
she is, even without spending alot of time with strangers. Pretty soon she'll
have new quarters with Zeus, the burro, who is slowly learning to accept this
big baby girl.
