We started Hames &
Axle with education in mind, and it's time to get back to it.
Fewer people, of all ages, are exposed to farm animals and agriculture we've
decided to open our doors, to a limited extent to help people understand the
importance of local, sustainable agriculture.
We're not a big farm, nor are we very mechanized, but we are accessible and
willing to share
our place with visitors.
We offer the following programs
at this time:
FarmTour/General Farm Introduction - This is
just a simple tour of our immediate farm area. Meet the animals, including
Magi and Zeus, and tour the farm, gardens and see what wildlife wants to make
their presence known.
Estimated Duration: 30-45 minutes
Dairying: Goat Style - Meet our herd and learn the basics of goat dairy farming. Depending upon the time of day, milking may be involved. Introduction to milk handling, and a chance to make a dairy product to take home - butter!
Chickens - The first farm animal for many entering the world of agriculture. You'll meet our Buff Orpington flock, learn about different types of chickens, and learn a bit more about eggs and chicks. More is planned for the spring, including meat birds and possibly turkeys!
Songs of the Land - Singing has been a part of farming since the beginning. Part performance, part participation, the guitar and our voices will meet the farm through singing.
All programs/tours must be pre-arranged.
Geared toward small groups, such as homeschoolers and families.
Fees: $3/child 2-10 years of age
$5/person over age 10
Maximum family fee - $25/family
(This does not apply to group maximum, only families. Sorry)
Why only small groups and prior
arrangement? - This is our home, and we value the animal's
sense of safety. By limiting numbers and times, our animals will still be
able to enjoy their
serenity and safety, while also opening the "farm gate," to visitors.
Thanks for understanding.
